Van Tri Golf Club
About
Upscale and very water-heavy course with impeccable conditioning
Conveniently located just 30 minutes from downtown Hanoi, Van Tri Golf Club is an upscale private golf club featuring an immaculately maintained 18-hole golf course designed by Peter Rousseau. Virtually all the holes feature water, and the beautifully contoured paspalum fairways are lined with pine trees and dotted with impeccably-sculpted sand traps, making this course a visual treat. Despite numerous forced water carries and some very fast greens, fairly generous landing areas mean the course shouldn't intimidate high handicappers, so golfers of all abilities can enjoy a round here.
There are a number of great holes here, starting with the par-3 4th, where, in full view of the clubhouse, your tee shot must find an attractive island green guarded by a pair of bunkers. The 8th is a beautiful par 4 that sits right on a the water, and even from the blue tees requires a very tough 200-yard carry to the safety of the narrow fairway, which pinches even further as you approach the green which bulges out into the lake.
The front nine ends with an excellent par 5 that gently doglegs through trees before culminating in an island green; you'll need a monster drive to even consider going for the green in two, and a pair of bunkers either side of the landing zone mean there's not much room for error. Four more bunkers surrounding the green mean any approach must land on the putting surface, so you're best off playing this as a genuine par 5.
The 11th is another great long hole, this time doglegging to the right, with trees to one side and water both off the tee and to the left of the fairway, while the bunker-free par-4 12th features a fairway that's split into two narrow channels by a long line of trees; the pin position should dictate which side you choose, but either way, the shallow green will be hard to find.
The excellent run of closing holes starts with the 16th is an excellent par-3 with another island green, this one featuring a very sloped putting surface. The 17th is a genuine par 5 with a narrow, snaking fairway, a pair of menacing fairway bunkers and an unusual island segment of fairway just short of the green, while the round ends with an attractive par 4 that doglegs around water, meaning your final approach must flirt with danger to find a green that slopes towards the lake.
The clubhouse features excellent lockers rooms, a fully-stocked pro shop and restaurant serving both Vietnamese and international cuisine. Private rooms are on hire for larger groups and special events.
