An excellent, undulating course that's sadly seen better days
Located in the serene, cool climate of the Tam Dao Mountains, about 70 kilometers outside of Hanoi, Tam Dao Golf Resort is a very picturesque 18-hole course that combines stunning scenery with challenging gameplay, with the massive mountains in the backdrop offering the impression of being in the Alps or Adirondacks. Designed by IMG, the par-72 layout features generous fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and a network of lakes and streams, with multiple elevation changes throughout the course adding an extra layer of difficulty.
The course stars with a great uphill par-5, with a risk-reward proposition right from the 1st tee. With a water hazard just 200 yards away, you've either got to lay up or go very long. Either way, you'll still have to avoid the bunkers and awkwardly-placed tree just short of the green.
The most difficult hole on the course awaits at the par-4 5th, an acute dog-leg with the large lake in play most of the way to the green. Make a hole-in-one at the par-3 8th and you could walk off with a TV but at over 200 yards from the blue tees that is a tall order.
After a reasonably simple start the back nine gets serious as you approach the very difficult uphill par-3 12th, whose narrow green is protected by bunkers and run-off areas. The 13th offers great views with a large fairway bunker and a stream crossing the fairway to catch out the long hitters, while the picturesque 14th has a green protected by numerous bunkers on one side and water on the other.
One of the highlights of Tam Dao Golf Resort used to be the immaculate condition of the course, and you could originally expect double-cut fairways and close-cut greens, but we hear that maintenance has been uneven at best in recent years so it's probably best to lower your expectations somewhat.
Likewise, the clubhouse has seen better days, but the locker rooms and the restaurant serves up decent food and drinks. While this all takes the edge off the experience, the bones of the course are excellent and it still makes for an excellent day's golfing in the Hanoi area, even if it's not worth hanging around afterwards.
