A very long, undulating 18-hole championship course rated as Vietnam's toughest
One of two highly regarded courses at Sky Lake Resort & Golf Club, the Lake Course is a 7,557-yard monster rated as the most challenging course in the country by the Vietnam Golf Association back in 2013. A championship-level course that follows the undulating terrain as it winds through a series of lakes with mountains offering picture-perfect views, is a course where being long and straight off the tee is a big help, with several lengthy uphill par 4s to contend with.
Although the fairways are fairly generous, missing them can result in difficult lies in thick rough, being blocked out by large trees, or even a lost ball thanks to the severe drop-offs that flank most holes. Fortunately the paspalum fairways leave the ball sitting up nicely, making it slightly easier when trying to find the large multi-tier greens guarded by steep greenside bunker complexes.
The opening pair of par 4s, while long, are at least downhill, each with bunker complexes in the landing zone. The 3rd is a memorable genuine par-5 where the hole jags to the right at 90 degrees just before the green, making for a tough approach over a substantial bunker, and there's an equally tough approach required at the 5th, another long par-5 that plays around a lake to a semi-island green.
After the turn, your drive at the 10th must carry at least 250 yards to avoid the bunkers waiting in the landing zone, while the green at the very pretty par-3 13th is completely surrounded by a massive bunker that dominates the hole. It's followed by the hardest hole on the course, a 470-yard par 4 with a cluster of five bunkers just short of the green designed to ensnare what will inevitably be a very long approach.
Of the closing holes, the 16th is a beautiful par-3 that plays to a tabletop green sitting right on the water, while the last is a beauty. A long, snaking par-5 with a narrowing fairway, it requires an accurate drive between a cluster of bunkers and a challenging final approach over a lake to find a narrow green with bunkers front and back.
The Sky Lake Resort and Golf Club has a large modern clubhouse in an elevated position offering great views over the surrounding countryside, and features decent locker rooms, a well-stocked golf shop and a restaurant serving a selection of Asian and Western cuisine. There is also a floodlit driving range with chipping and putting practice area.
