Spectacular 54-hole complex let down by indifferent maintenance and average facilities
Located in a truly spectacular setting of towering mountains and limestone cliffs an hour from Hanoi, Phoenix Golf Resort is a 54-hole complex whose three excellent courses are somewhat let down by inconsistent maintenance and service that isn't always up to par. Each of the Ronald Fream-designed courses, named the Phoenix, Dragon and Champion courses are intelligently routed through at times seriously undulating terrain, with steep ravines, substantial bunkering and numerous mountain streams providing a tough test.
The Phoenix and Dragon courses make the best use of the natural topology, with the latter the pick of the three courses, as it plays through the spectacular limestone cliffs. The scenery is so spellbinding that it can be hard to concentrate on taming what it a wonderfully-designed golf course. The best hole is probably the par-5 4th, where a stream creates what is effectively three island fairways offering multiple routes to the green.
The Champion is a more open links-style course, where the fairways are bumpy but lacking the dramatic elevation changes of the other two courses. The beset of the holes include the 9th, a pretty par-3 requiring a carry over water and a large beach bunker to a narrow green with another sand trap behind, and the 14th, a par-4 with an usual split fairway, meaning you can choose to carry water off the tee or on approach.
The massive clubhouse features all the usual facilities, but is let down by poor maintenance and indifferent service, so you're best off heading back to Hanoi after your round.
