Excellent UK-style links course adjacent to the South China Sea
Part of the exclusive Samson Beach and Golf Resort, around 170km south of Hanoi, FLC Samson Golf Links is a high quality links course reminiscent of those in the British Isles. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, you can expect to find hard, fast fairways lined with native grasses and sand dunes, water hazards wrapped with sleeper clad walls and large, undulating greens that are a delight to play on thanks to some high quality maintenance.
The course has a blustery, open feel, with the strong winds coming in off the South China Sea encouraging you to play the traditional bump-and-run shots that links courses usually require, although with five lakes coming into play, at some point you're going to have to take on the wind head on.
There are some memorable moments. From the narrow fairway of the par-4 5th, you'll face a very demanding approach to a green that sits right on the edge of the water, with a deep bunker just in front, while the par-5 8th features water to the left off the tee and water to the right on approach, its narrow fairway leaving very little room for error.
After the 10th, whose very large green is shared with the 2nd hole, the pick of the par 3s is the 11th, which features water from tee to green, the putting surface running right up to the edge of the water. The 13th is a driveable par 4 that doglegs around a lake, and despite the presence of some very large waste bunkers, it's the approaches over water required at the 15th and 18th that will live longest in the memory.
Away from the course, there are extensive practice facilities, including large driving range, chipping, bunker and putting areas, while the clubhouse is a modern, state-of-the art affair featuring large, luxurious locker rooms, a well-stocked pro shop and a well-reviewed restaurant serving local and international fare, albeit at something of a premium.
Despite its distance from the city, a trip to FLC Samson Golf Links is well worth making two hour drive on your next golf holiday in Hanoi.
