Amber Hills Golf & Resort (Hillside Course)
About
Mountainous and challenging championship course that's well worth the trip
Spectacularly set in the majestic Nham Bien mountain range in Bac Giang province, the Hillside Course at Amber Hills Golf Resort (formerly known as Yen Dung Golf Course) earned the Vietnam Golf Magazine's title of “Vietnam’s Most Challenging Golf Course” for two consecutive years (2019–2020). Designed by the renowned American firm Albanese & Lutzke Inc., the course masterfully utilises the area’s natural slopes, water features, and elevations to create a layout that blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.
Golfers can expect diverse fairways, spiral layouts, and multi-level greens, each offering unique challenges. The strategic placement of sand traps, bunkers, and water hazards keeps even seasoned players on their toes. The ever-changing wind patterns add an extra layer of complexity, making Amber Hills a true test of skill and precision.
The course design pays homage to Vietnamese culture, incorporating elements inspired by local symbols. A standout example is Hole 4, which draws inspiration from the sacred Turtle, a symbol of longevity and strength in Vietnamese tradition. The green complex is designed to resemble a turtle’s shell, surrounded by five sand bunkers representing its head and legs, creating a visually striking and symbolic layout.
Another memorable hole is the last, a dramatic par 3 that plays from an elevated tee box offering panoramic views. The green is huge, but judging distances and compensating for the wind means that finding the putting surface isn't a foregone conclusion. Even if you miss, it's a great photo opportunity.
Away from the course itself, Amber Hills Golf Resort offers world-class amenities. The clubhouse features luxurious locker rooms, a pro shop stocked with top-tier golf equipment and apparel, and a restaurant serving Asian and European cuisine, including local specialties from Bac Giang.
